Revives DeadPoets In the midst of teaching, my mind often wanders to the great inspiration of Mr. Keating in the film Dead Poets Society.   I first saw this film as an aspiring teacher and was so moved that I cried all the way home.   There was something about those students standing up on their desks in support of their inspirational teacher, defying expulsion, that moved me deeply, . . . and still does. Recently brought me back to that image or, more specifically, to the image of the students of The Dead Poets Society chanting a poem, getting back to the primal nature of rhythmic poetry in a cave near their college prep school.   How?   By what seemed to be a simple question asked by a student: What is your outlook on The Congo by Vachel Lindsay? I was interested in the question and intrigued even further by the first answer, so I decided to reread The Congo and was struck by the verses echo from the movie Dead Poets Society: THEN I had religion, THEN I had a vision. / I could not turn from their revel and derision.  / THEN I SAW THE CONGO CREEPING THROUGH THE BLACK, / CUTTING THROUGH THE JUNGLE WITH THE GOLDEN TRACK. They young men in The Dead Poets Society use this poem properly, I might add, using Lindsays own stage direction and do great justice to this rhythmical chant:   they are simply using spoken language to honor the poets of old, . . . poets of all races. Furthermore, my take on The Congo generally coincides with the rest of academia that chides Vachel Lindsay for being a well-meaning but misguided primitivist.  Ã‚  Ah, if there were just a way to put a  more positive spin on this statement!   I truly believe that Lindsay was doing the African-American race a great service, giving great honor to the absolutely superior rhythm of their music and, therefore, of their poetry. The reality is, however, that living in the turn of the century white world of the late 1800s tends to lend itself to decades of  erroneous assumption, . . . even if he DID discover a very young Langston Hughes at a restaurant.   It is incredibly important to note that Lindsay considered himself to be a staunch advocate for the African-American race!   One wonders why his stress on Their Basic Savagery in this particular poem didnt make him read between the lines just a bit.   A link to the poem is included below, so you can see for yourself. The irony here is, it isnt that the things in The Congo arent true, per se.   (Could this be the very first instance of political-correctness?!?)   It is simply the way it is presented that puts a focus more on the pre-industrialized continent of Africa (which, by the way, is not in itself a bad thing!) instead of the great advancements of the culture, especially in how it has influenced the culture of the Western world. Still, I wanted to explore this subject further, so I asked a friend of mine, Sarah McDowell:   a leading expert in present-day Tanzania.   Here was her take on the subject: Even though the language is pretty derogatory in today’s world, there does seem to be a strange feeling though that the poet actually does have some respect or at least sort of romanticizes  the savages.†   I like that it is so lyrical, but to use mumbo  jumbo and boom boom boom so much in a poem seems sort of  naive to me.   Ã‚  I have a hard time with anything that uses the term savage at all.   I am pretty wary of anything that creates such a strong divide between and Us and Them.   Hard to feel equal and respectful toward anyone that one sees them as Other.   I know that the poem has to be looked at though in its context, and I cut it more slack when I do that.   Very vivid in lyrical form. I was amazed further at Sarah’s take on the poem and how very similar it was to many literary critics because Sarah hadn’t been exposed to anything but the poem itself and, therefore, was not influenced by many critics’ persuasive language in the matter. To me this shows that, even from the standards of modern-day  Tanzania, this older literary criticism of â€Å"The Congo† and consequently of Vachel Lindsay continues to ring true. I may never watch that Dead Poets Society primal cave scene quite the same way again!

Machiavelli's Understanding of Virtue - Essay Example In his work The Prince, Machiavelli suggests that he has authored something of practical value for anyone who understands it, and it will appear that he strives for practical utility rather than abstract or religious notions of goodness or virtue.3 Although tradition and religion equated effective rule by a ruler with upright behaviour and virtue, requiring a ruler to be a good Christian, Machiavelli goes forth to suggest boldly that any ruler who took such advice was staring at ruin. In Machiavelli’s opinion, it is far more important for any ruler to save the state than to worry about vices. Thus, according to Machiavelli, a ruler or a prince should only appear to possess conventional virtues such as liberality, mercy, trustworthiness, and piety.4 Machiavelli states that it is likely that the people will take for granted generosity in a ruler and then proceed to demand generosity. Thus, it is best to avoid generosity because this virtue is likely to force a ruler to burden th e people with taxes to make the ruler unpopular.5 Machiavelli argues against the bad use of mercy by a ruler because it is impossible to keep a people united and prepared for action towards progress without a fear of the ruler.6 In Machiavelli’s opinion, it does not make sense for a wise ruler to keep his word if the consequences of this were to cause the ruler harm because all men are wicked and self-interested creatures who do similarly.7 Thus, Machiavelli argues only for appearances of virtues in a ruler because such appearances serve best, but in reality, a ruler must do that which benefits the ruler most.8 In all his arguments presented in his work The Prince, Machiavelli maintains a focus on the growth of the state, with a ruler or prince having a need for recognising that states grow, or they may end. Thus, although Machiavelli does not dismiss Christian virtues, recognising their appeal and prestige, he urges the ruler to adopt a proper use of traditional virtues. Acc ording to Machiavelli, if times are peaceful and all men virtuous, a ruler can afford the luxury of moral practice, but a ruler should be prepared to cultivate an appearance of virtue while exercising its opposite to ensure that the state will remain secure. Machiavelli maintains in The Prince his stance that a prince or a ruler, especially a new ruler, cannot maintain all things good and virtuous because of a need for maintaining the state by acting against faith, charity, humanity and religion when the situation demands this.9 Thus, it will appear that according to Machiavelli, practical utility and success are far more important than any loyalty to notions of virtue or good. Basically businesses use databases anytime a large amount of data must be stored in such a manor that it can easily be searched, categorized and recalled in different means that can be easily read and understood by the end user. Databases are used extensively where I work. In fact, since Hyperion Solutions is a database and financial intelligence software developing company we produce one. To keep the material within scope I shall narrow the use of databases down to what we use just in the Orlando office of Hyperion Solutions alone.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the Orlando office we have three main databases. We have a Microsoft Access Database, a Visual Source Safe database, and a Microsoft SQL server database with a custom web client front end. The Microsoft Access database is fairly simple. We use this data base to keep track of the computer hardware and software configurations that are used when doing quality assurance testing and problem replication and troubleshooting of the software product. For any one product we can have up to twenty or thirty different configurations. Initially keeping track of the configurations along with the machine name and IP address was done on paper with a grid like matrix. After a short period of time, this became extremely time consuming and impractical. A simple database was set up in Access and then the database was shared to allow each user to be able to find out what configuration each computer was in for that day or that week so that the proper tests and or bug reporting could be conducted. The database allows the users to search by software version, platform type, operating system, machine name, IP address, memory size, and several other items that are not as significant. Before the database was created the engineer would have to leave their desk find the chart and to a cross reference using the matrix that was drawn up, and hopefully that matrix was kept up to date. Now as the technicians update or change the machine configurations they can enter that information immediately into the database and it will automatically provide a matrix view or a tabular view for any engineer who needs it.

Analysis of the Poem the Red Hat Essay

Rachel Hadas’ poem â€Å"The Red Hat† is told from the viewpoint of the parents of a young boy who begins to walk to school by himself. The poem reveals the actions and emotions of the parents who struggle with allowing their son to become more independent. However, this poem is not simply a story of a boy starting to walk to school on his own. The underlying theme is about a boy leaving the protection and safety of his parents to enter the world by himself. In the middle of the first stanza the lines, â€Å"these parallel paths part† interrupt the flow of the poem. Here, at Straus Park, the boy must really separate from his parents. When Hadas write, â€Å"The watcher’s heart stretches, elastic in its love and fear, toward him as we see him disappear, striding briskly†, she introduces the reader to one of the most significant parts of the poem. His parents, the watchers, extend their â€Å"elastic† hearts to their son out of love and fear as well. They look back two weeks, remembering when they held their son’s hand as they walked to school. The parents will not let their son go on alone until they feel satisfied that he can handle the responsibility. Even though the son proves his capability of walking to school, the parents still worry. When they finally let their son continue on his own, they worry about the potential dangers in the world. The parents will always worry, because their boy can never be completely safe. The author uses vivid description to allow the reader to develop a mental picture of what takes place. The boy walks up the east side of West End, while his parents follow behind on the west side. An understanding between the boy and his parent’s permits extended glances across the street, but not eye contact. This unsaid agreement allows the parents the opportunity to look over at their son to check on him, and it gives the boy a chance to occasionally look back and know that his parents are still there for him. The remaining lines of the poem follow in a sequential AA, BB rhyming pattern. When taken literally, this poem is merely a tale of a young boy learning to walk to school on his own and his parents’ concern over letting him go. In order for parents to let their child go off into the world, they must be sure that their child will look both ways before he crosses the street, and that he does not talk to strangers.
